It is TIME!!

Like previous years the registration asks some questions about how you want to participate. Some general questions about the time blocks that you are available for, how many hours you are willing to commit to logging and operating. From that registration information the FD team will work put together a proposed operations plan. (See GRFFD25 Issue #2)

Early registration is important for planning as well as acquiring steaks and T-shirts. Please take a moment to think about how you want to contribute to this years Field Day activity and REGISTER.

The ARROW Communications Association and the Toledo Mobile Radio Association (TMRA) are proud to sponsor a motor coach trip to the Hamvention 2025 in Dayton, Ohio. This one-day trip leaves early in the morning on May 17, 2025 and returns the same day after Hamvention closes for the day at 5:00 p.m. The bus has two pickup spots, in Ann Arbor and in Toledo (Rossford). November Sweeps Results - With a twist.

2024 November sweeps are behind us and the results are in.

When we opened the intra club contest we were remiss in mentioning that the contest was for current club members.

Our good Friend Michael Fluegemann - KE8AQW scored and impressive 47,520 pts. working CW. This meant that Michael had the highest overall score. For his efforts the he is being awarded with an Honorable Mention of the the Top Scoring Individual Operator.

Bruce AC8KD replaced Michael's spot on the Wave:Ratios.

With the final QSOs counted. That puts team Kill-o-Watt as the winner of this year's Club Sweeps contest. Their prize... a year of Fortune and Glory.

Proposed Changes on 900 MHz Band

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently allowing public comment on a proposal by private company NextNav Inc. that would reconfigure the 902-928 MHz band widely used by amateur radio and Meshtastic, and replace it with a backup GPS system...

At the very least, this product is likely to disrupt range and performance of Meshtastic devices- but the implications could be far wider. It has the potential to cripple the network and interfere with other frequency usage including that of tollbooth operators and other LoRaWAN devices.

As a youth services librarian running a fun radio and broadcasting history class for 10-14 year olds, I've been able to get some great use out of your Amateur Radio Club's resource links lists during these times of remote learning. We were even able to use some of this information for our most recent group project! Thanks so much for sharing!

I hope you don't mind, one of our youngest, Dylan has also asked me if I could share an article that he and his father found together recently on The History of the Car Radio with you, which includes a great timeline featuring the large-scale radio broadcasting boom of the 1920's, the invention of the first radio for military purposes, the form and function of early car radios, etc. I've included it below if you'd like to review!

We noticed you didn't have this one listed yet, but Dylan was actually the one to bring up that this could be something you might like to include for others who may also come across your information and have an interest in radio history.

Amateur Radio Technician License Class

The Wyandotte Bacon Memorial Library and the Motor City Radio Club will present a series of 10 classes for the amateur radio technician class license.

Classes will take place on Saturdays beginning January 21 thru March 25 2023. 10 am to 12 noon at the library. Please note we will need a minimum of 6 students to hold these classes.

FERMIX (FERMI) EXERCISE Tuesday September 20, 2022 will start sometime after 9am (FEMA is running the drill) and will be done before 2pm.

How can you help? Be available for check-ins on the Monroe K8RPT repeater 146.72 - 600 offset 100 Hz PL.

Open to any licensed amateur radio operator who can reliability reach the Monroe repeater, from Downriver, you will need an outside antenna.

Check-ins will occur every 15 minutes after the hour and 15 minutes before the hour. This will be a directed net, and operators should advise the net control station if securing your station.

Please keep all net radio transmissions short and concise. The Monroe & Ida repeaters will not be available for normal amateur use during the drill.

Upon check in you will be asked if you can be available for a SIMULATED assignment, you don’t have to do anything, other than to try to stay on the net.

You may be told you are assigned to a location, remember THIS IS A DRILL, do not go to the location.

So if you are around your radio Tuesday September 20, you are welcome to help out.

The family of a former club member, Ken Stecker W8SS, is looking for any parties interested in his station. Ken was president of our club in 1957, he became SK in 1988. His grandchildren are in the process of trying to clean up the family home. Paul, Ken's grandson, has sent some pictures of the station the collection of vintage radio gear. There is a substantial amount of stuff. As Paul and his sister work to inventory and formulate a plan of action. He has invited any MCRC member to the Dearborn home to look around and see if there is gear that you would be interested in.

They would like to sell as much of the equipment as possible. Ken's son, Paul's father, is struggling with dementia. Funds from the sale of the radio gear will be used towards supporting their father's health care.

MCRC Voting in the time of a State of Emergency

Members of the Motor City Radio Club.

At the board meeting on July 10, 2020 (held via video conference) the members of the Board discussed the struggles the COVID-19 pandemic has presented to our organization. Not least of which the upcoming nominations and elections of officers. Normally we would be opening nominations for officers at the September meeting and casting vote for those positions at the October meeting. Due to current restrictions in place for in-person meetings it has become obvious that another option needs to be presented.

To that end, the board unanimously agreed to the following process of handling voting and motions:

* Membership can cast votes electronically through the W8MRM website.

* All motions will be published on the website and emailed to the membership.

* A three (3) day discussion and Q&A period will follow each motion. A forum will be set up on the website for members to ask questions and debate the motion publicly.

* Following the three (3) day discussion period, a voting period of no less than seven (7) days will be provided for members to cast their votes online.

* After the polls close, the total number of votes cast must be greater than or equal to a quorum of the membership. (Required total votes for any particular motion will be published as part of the motion. And shall represent a quorum of members at the time the motion is published.) Motions that fail to receive a vote total greater or equal to a quorum will not pass.

* Members wishing to make a motion must do so via email to at least three (3) members of the board. All motions made this way will then be presented to the membership for a vote.

The tool used on the website allows only members in good standing to cast a vote. All of the votes cast on the website are SECRET. If for some reason you are unable to cast your vote electronically, you can mail in a "ballot" indicating what motion you are casting a vote for and if you are voting yeah or nay for that motion. Ballots must be sent to the club's PO box and need to be received before the voting period has expired.

It is with a very heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Bruce Wayne Moyer KI8GR Yesterday 05/25/2020 Bruce collapsed and passed at home, he was 72 years old,

Bruce was very active in the MCRC in years past holding many offices including Secretary, Vice President and President from 1998-2001

In the 90's Bruce could always be found on the Wyandotte repeater at all hours of the night and would most likely say come on over and have a cup of coffee. He would always participate in Field Day, captain the Novice station and take charge of the midnight chili

While in recent years other interests took his radio time away he was always a joy to talk to. Bruce will be greatly missed Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Carol and Son William. 73 my friend..

Bob K8HV was taken by ambulance to Wyandotte Hospital with difficulty breathing earlier this week. For privacy sake I will not share explicit details.

He was NOT diagnosed with COVID-19. and was treated and responded very well to treatment. I was able to get him all of the well wishes that were expressed on the 24MAR20 Net. I will update as I have more information.

28MAR20 update, Bob is still in Wyandotte Hospital still recovering, I have not heard that he has been moved out of ICU. He is reported as being in good spirits.

The focus on the meeting was dealing with the current Covid-19 situation and how to keep members engaged. A few points to take away from the discussion.

ALL General Membership meetings, board meetings, and breakfasts for the month of April are CANCELED.

The board will begin meeting every other Thursday via web conference for a quick status report and to discuss the changing situation.

We are looking for ways to continue to engage members and potential members. The following ideas were discussed

Continuing the General class instruction via the repeater or simplex
Club participation in the Michigan QSO party
Continuing the nightly informal check in net. Each night between 1900 and 2100 hours.
Weekly web casts on ham related topics. First one will possibly be a work session for FT-8 or other digital modes.

As of right now the FOX HUNT for May is still ON. You can look for some potential changes to the rules and how the hunt will operate as we won't be meeting for breakfast prior to the hunt.

As we are all dealing with the prospect of a few weeks in semi-isolation. It is important for our mental health to keep in contact with friends. We are asking that members take some time each night between 1900 and 2100 to sit in front of their radio and put out a {My Call} Listening there is a chance that someone out there needs a bit of social interaction. Have a five or ten-minute rag chew. Make sure your fellow ham is doing well. This isn't a formal net. It is an opportunity to connect and make this time of isolation a little less lonely.

I'm going to due my best to be at the radio for some part of each night. Hope you will find some time to do the same.

February 2020 QST has erroneously listed the LARC Swap on their Hamfest Calendar for Feb. 23.

This has caused some doubt and confusion, with a few individuals and vendors apparently thinking the event is back on.

As announced some time ago, the Livonia ARC 2020 swap event was, and remains, cancelled.

We are sad to report that Linda - KB8TOO experienced a devastating house fire on Monday 01/13/2020. Our thoughts are with her as her and her family begin the process of putting things back together. Everyone is fine.

It is still very early in the process. There will be many opportunities for us to provide Linda support. At this time please direct any questions you may have to the club officers. Many of us are already in touch with her and will help to organize efforts to provide her with the assistance she needs.

It is with a heavy and shocked heart that i inform W8MRM and WY8DOT of the passing of

Alan "AL" Adams. KD8LZW

Al was one of the people on our 2 meter net that you just knew would be there with a kind word and occasional signal report from Lincoln Park :-)

Al served our country, enjoyed antique Motorcycles, antique radios and Ham Radio along with many other things which kept him busy until his health sidelined those activity's. but he still checked in on Tuesday night....

I received an email from Al's son Jim with the news.

"This is a difficult note to write, but the communication is necessary.

This is Jim Adams, son of Allan Adams KD8LZW. I must unfortunately report

that my Father has passed away from complications of bladder cancer. He passed quietly while in hospice care at 11:07 PM Christmas Eve.

Before he passed, he asked me to try to contact John Roberts and report

that his most recent Net check-in would probably be his last.

He took pride in making consistent check-ins on Tuesday evening, and was a

life long radio enthusiast.

He also wanted to wish all the membership of the 2-Meter net a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year".

Even in his final hours he was thinking of others and his 2 meter net family

The FCC is Back in Business

[UPDATED: 2019-01-29 @ 2115 UTC] In the wake of the more-than-month-long partial government shutdown, the FCC said today that it would be tackling the backlog of applications already in the queue over the course of a couple days. The FCC had earlier indicated that it would resume processing Amateur Radio applications starting today. Subsequently, the Commission requested that the ARRL Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (VEC) give the agency time to work through its already-pending backlog, before ARRL VEC submit any additional new files. Information released before the shutdown said the FCC would take the first day it was open, which was Monday, January 28, to get idle systems up and running again.

“The FCC has resumed all operations since the partial funding lapse has ended,” the FCC said via Twitter on Monday.

The ARRL VEC now is awaiting word that it can transmit the some 2,300 pending Amateur Radio applications it has in the queue, many of them from 325 ARRL VEC examination sessions that took place during the shutdown or immediately prior to it. These do not include files that the other 13 VECs may be waiting to upload to the Universal Licensing System (ULS). ARRL VEC Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM, said the ARRL VEC won’t send all its pending files until it’s sure the system is working properly.

“We had some files already pending in their system, and then also uploaded a few new files into their system today to see if anything is happening yet,” she said earlier. Once the FCC gives the okay, “we are sending all of our files!” Somma said.

In a January 28 Public Notice addressing filing deadlines, the FCC pointed out that its filing window, mail operations, and electronic filing systems have been unavailable or unsupported during the partial shutdown, “except for filings necessary for the protection of life and property and filings related to spectrum auction activities.”

The FCC had announced in early January that all filings that would have been due during the suspension of operations, including applications to the ULS, would become due on the business day following the resumption of normal operations, January 29. “If the Commission is unable to restore electronic filing systems on the day the government reopens, the Commission may issue another Public Noticefurther extending filing deadlines.” The January 28 Public Notice said the Commission now is extending those deadlines by 1 day. “Thus, deadlines for all filings that would have been due from January 3 through January 29 are now extended until January 30, 2019,” the FCC said.

If an Amateur Radio license recently had expired or was about to expire before the shutdown, the licensee could apply for license renewal via the ULS and continue to operate while the FCC was closed, with the filed application remaining in limbo. Licensees who waited until the FCC reopened to apply will have 2 days to submit a renewal application before the license is considered to have expired in the FCC database.

The resumption of normal FCC operations means the FCC’s January 30 open meeting will be an in-person session. The Commission had made provisions for a teleconference should the shutdown not be over by the meeting date. The FCC said, however, that due to the funding lapse, items initially included in the tentative agenda published on January 3 would not be considered at this week’s meeting, which would address only “Commission announcements.”

Tuesday Night Two Meter Net Reminder

Just a reminder to everyone who checks into the Tuesday night information net. The WY8DOT repeater has been removed from its normal location and is now set up in a temporary location. Due to the current location and height of the antenna; you will more than likely have to turn up your power or check in from something more powerful than an HT with a rubber ducky antenna.

Frequency and PL settings are all still the same. 147.24 + PL 100

You will also notice that there is no courtesy tone at the end of a transmission. There is a brief squelch burst that follows when someone unkeys from the repeater.

As there is also no digital voice recorder (DVR) on the temporary repeater; KD8HFX will be monitoring the repeater tonight, starting at 2000. If you wish to get a signal report give him a call.

NIST station WWV and sister stations are among the oldest radio stations in the United States, having been in continuous operation since May 1920. The station has transmitted the official US Time for nearly 100 years and is an instrumental part in the telecommunications field, ranging from broadcasting to scientific research and education. Additionally, these stations transmit marine storm warnings from the National Weather Service, GPS satellite health reports, and specific information concerning current solar activity, and radio propagation conditions. These broadcasts are an essential resource to the worldwide communications industry. This petition requests continued funding of these stations be maintained into the 21st century and beyond to ensure future operations.

Last Sunday was a beautiful day to be outside!!! Ten volunteers from the MCRC got up extra early on Sunday to provide communications support to the annual Metro Grand Spring Tour bike ride.

Bell Isle Radio Day - April 7th

In 1928 the first radio broadcast to police car radios began at the police station on Belle Isle. (See the above 1928 Detroit Free Press article.) We are now preparing to celebrate the 90^th anniversary of that achievement.

50 years ago the IEEE placed a historical plaque at the Belle Isle police station building. Approximately 10 years ago the APCO ( https://www.apcointl.org/about-apco.html ) also supported the placement of a historical marker near the building.

Plans are in place for member of the local IEEE Section, the APCO, and members of the Amateur Radio community ( http://www.arrl.org ) to visit to Belle Isle between 10 AM and 4 PM on April 7th to hold re-dedication ceremonies for both plaques.

Bill Boyke (N8OZV) of the Ford Motor Company, Tin Lizzy Amateur Radio Club has registered special event Amateur Radio Station, 'K0P' (Kilo Zero Papa) with the FCC, and is working on commemorative QSL cards.

We expect to see participation from several local Amateur Radio clubs in the form of operation of low power (QRP) emergency radio communication equipment and simple wire, loop or vertical antennas. All this equipment is small, easily portable and will be unobtrusive and completely removed at the end of the day.

The DNR's rules, in the “Michigan State Parks on the Air” program prohibit using trees in state parks to hang antennas. There's very good reason, disease spores can easily live on wire or rope that can be transmitted from tree to tree.

So, we should see lots of Verticals and Loop antennas, along with Poles & Inverted ‘Vs’, etc.

But, no antennas in trees on Belle Isle!

This is a unique opportunity to see Amateur Radio at work and to view its place in emergency communications at this re-dedication event on Belle Isle. It can also be a great 'pre Field Day' event to help Hams get emergency equipment, antennas, generators, etc. out of moth balls and back to work.

Plans are for a 10 AM setup and operate through 4 PM for pack up.

The original station call sign from the FCC for this station was W8FS. That call is now held by Lowell Price of Grand Blanc, and he has been invited as a 'special representative' for the day.

The gathering arrangements are:

· Time - 10:00 AM through 4 PM.

· Location - Parking lot & grounds around the Belle Isle Police Station building.

· NOTE: A Michigan State Park pass on your vehicle license plate is needed to enter Belle Isle, (unless entry is by foot or bicycle or public transportation.)

· Water & Rest Rooms at the Aquarium, about 0.36 miles, or about a 15 minute walk away….so…

· Plan for a picnic type day and bring water, food, sunscreen and a shade hat.

For the Amateur Radio Community, as you arrive, we have some organizational business to conduct:

· Once you arrive please switch to Simplex Frequency 146.52

· We plan to operate “Station K0P” with multiple rigs and operating frequencies / Times / Modes / so we are developing a Scheduling system to maximize everyone’s on-air time.

Driving Directions:

Entrance to the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle is at the junction of E. Jefferson Ave. and E. Grand Blvd.

(The nearest Interstate highway junction appears to be the I-375 spur from the I-75, and E. Jefferson Ave.)

Note: Most major roads on the island are one way, so pay attention to the signs.

Cross the bridge, and stay to the right avoiding the construction.

As you enter Belle Isle proper, you are directed to the right onto Sunset Drive.

Stay to the left as Sunset Drive divides to become Casino Way. Stay left!

Turn left onto Central Ave.

Follow Central Ave. past Muse Road, Picnic Way and Fleming Street.

Approach the status of Major General Alpheus Starkey Williams (no relation) at the junction of Central Ave. and Inselruhe Ave.

Stay to the right of the statue, and circle to the left around the statue, effectively turning left onto Inselruhe Ave.

Inselruhe Ave.is a two way street, so traffic can approach from both directions!

Presentation:

ARRL Laboratory Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI, has promised to give us the real "inside" information about what goes on in the ARRL Lab. He has a presentation that is chock full of information about the day-to-day things that happen in Lab when nobody is looking. Ed claims that every word is true, even the tall tales, but some of them involve fishing, so we suspect that a few of them may be a bit, um... well... exaggerated. Ed tell us, however, that will tell a few tales that you will never read about in the pages of QST! Much of the work of the Lab has lately been related to EMC and interference problems, so Ed will give us the insider view on the problems facing Amateur Radio and what is being done to try to address them.

Biography:

Ed Hare, W1RFI, is employed by ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio. After an industry career in product testing, he came to work at ARRL HQ in 1986.

He started as ARRL’s "Product Review" test engineer, moved on to becoming ARRL’s "RFI guru" (notice his call!) and he now holds the position of Laboratory Manager. Over the years he has written quite a number of RFI articles, ranging from articles for QST and the "ARRL Handbook" to articles about the practical aspects of RFI that have appeared in professional trade journals.

He is also one of the authors of the ARRL "RFI Book" and the author of the ARRL's book on RF exposure, "RF Exposure and You." He is very active holding a seat for Amateur Radio on various industry committees, serving as a voting membership on the IEEE EMC Society Standards Development and Education Committee, the ANSI accredited C63® EMC Committee as Chair of Subcommittee 5 on Immunity, and is the IEEE EMC Society Vice President of Standards, representing ARRL and the interests of Amateur Radio as industry standards are developed.

He is a member of the IEEE Standards Association, the IEEE EMC Society and the Power Engineering Society. His personal operating interest is QRP CW, where Ed’s motto is …….. “Five Watts is a Lot of Power!” He is presently doing work on HF using 10 milliwatts, reporting 30 states worked, all in the ARRL CW Sweepstakes. the following is the obituary from the Monroe News

Carl H. Brinkmeier, age 90, of South Rockwood, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 9, 1926 in Monroe County, Michigan, he was the son of Carl and Anna (Woitzel) Brinkmeier.
On May 26, 1945 he married Madeline Campbell in St. John Lutheran Church, Waltz, Michigan.
Carl was a farmer in the local area for 65 years, he also owned and operated Carls Airport on Sigler Road, had his pilot license for 65 years and was a Ham Radio Operator.
He was a lifetime member of the Flat Rock Elks Lodge1731 and the Breast Bay Gun Club. He had a cottage in Rapid River were he loved to spend time camping and hunting.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son, Thomas Brinkmeier.
Surviving are his sons, John (Marjorie) Brinkmeier of Newport and James Brinkmeier of S. Rockwood, 5 grandchildren, Paul Brinkmeier, Bonnie Fallon, Jaime Brinkmeier, Jeff Jackson, Michelle Johnson; 6 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild and another one on the way.
Friends may visit in the Arthur Bobcean Funeral Home, Carleton Chapel on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 1:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Rev. James Williams will officiate the service. Burial will be in Ash Cemetery, Ash Township, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the ProMedica Hospice.

One of the locations we are investigating is the Metro Parks. We have started our conversations with them and one issue that came up is access to the park after hours.

The park officially closes at 10pm and does not open again until 7am.

For those of you who may wish to operate in those late hours would you be willing to tough it out for the entire time between 10pm and 7am or is this a deal breaker that would exclude using the Metro Park location?

Obituary for Norman McAtee

Norman McAtee, age 76, of Brownstown, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Born on November 15, 1940 in Wayne, Michigan, he was the son of Vinton and Frances (Hartman) McAtee. On June 19, 1964 he married Cathie Lessard in the EUB Port Creek Church, Carleton, MI.
Norman served in the U.S. Navy from June, 1959 to June, 1963.
He was employed with Northwest Airlines for 33 years from January 9, 1964 until his retirement on October 1, 1997.
Norman was a member of the First United Methodist Church Flat Rock, Motor City Radio Club and Flat Rock Kiwanis. He enjoyed family activities, fishing, traveling and games of chance.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers (Harlow and George).
Surviving are his wife, Cathie McAtee of Brownstown; two daughters, Christine (Christopher) Kindred of Ocoee, FL and Carlene Pike of Brownstown; three grandchildren, Meghann, Elanor and Samuel of Ocoee, FL; brother, Phillip McAtee and sister, Ruth Claxton of Ypsilanti; three grand critters (Murphy, Penny and Libby).
Celebration of life services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 28400 Evergreen St., Flat Rock on Saturday, December 17, at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Dana R. Strall will officiate the service. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory, may be made to: the First United Methodist Church Flat Rock, Michigan Heart Association or National Kidney Foundation.

I Just received this email;

Hi,

This is Carla Pike, daughter of Norman McAtee (KB8EXV). I am sorry to have to tell you that Norman passed away earlier this week, on December 5 :( My parents were actually on the flight to Hawaii when it happened. My mom, Cathie, flew home today.

He is being cremated in Hawaii and then sent back home. We are planning on a celebration of life service for Saturday, December 17. The service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 28400 Evergreen, Flat Rock, MI. We will be meeting with the pastor early next week to confirm the time. There will be a luncheon after the service, also at the church.

I'll contact you again once the time of the service is decided. Please spread the word to let the other members of the radio club know. In lieu of flowers, the family would rather have donations go to the American Heart Association, the National Kidney Foundation, or to the First United Methodist Church of Flat Rock.

Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon

Hello, All Hams & Friends,

Most of you should have received at least one notice from Brian Frost, who is Coordinating Radio Communications for the Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon, on October 15 (5K/Kids Run) and October 16 (Marathon/Half Marathons/Relay). Brain worked alongside Kevin Gilday last year.

This is our biggest event of the year, and one the Kevin was most concerned with. Organizers are expecting 30,000 runners! We need every possible ham, along with other volunteers who are comfortable using a radio. Since we use commercial channels, operators do not have to be licensed hams, and we can supply the radios.

I know some of you don’t like signing up for events, especially online. So it is most important that we know who plans to attend either or both days. The plan is to have the trailer down at MDOT, as in the past. There are only a few changes to the course (ex. away from the Greyhound station). There is also a need for course marshals – a good opportunity for non-radio friends and family to help alongside us..

PLEASE – let us know as soon as possible if you plan to attend and which days. And if any friends or family will join you. Also, it would help for me to get your shirt sizes.

MI QSO Party Update

MCRC's participation in the Michigan QSO party went very well. Members took this opportunity to hone existing skills and to teach the new operators the ways of good contesting.

Two of our newest operators Tony KE8CDD and Patrick KE8DOA took the operating positions under the watchful eye of Joel WU8Y. Under Joel's tutelage the two new guys found their rhythm and were working pileups like champs.

Experienced operators Stan K8SB, Joel WU8Y, Bob AC8DZ, Gary W8GPR and Jim KD8HFX took over the airwaves and pounded out contact after contact. (Well K8SB was the only one truly "pounding out contacts" Stan's CW skills are unmatched!)

It’s MGST Time Again!

We have once again been asked to provide communications in support of the 33^rd Annual Metro Grand Spring Tour. The ride will be on Sunday, May 1, 2016 and starts at the Willow Metropark at 7 AM. We usually cover about 15 checkpoints along the route. If you are interested in signing up, please go to the club website, see me at the March or April meeting or you can contact me via email or phone. All help will be greatly appreciated. Don’t forget we get a free pancake breakfast provided by Chris Cakes at the Erie Metropark in Rockwood until 1 PM. (Park entrance fee applies.) Below, I have included some information on what we do and what you need to bring.

What to Bring:

An automobile (each person needs transportation unless working together)
Radio capable of 5 Watt output. Higher power Mobile Rig preferred
Antenna capable of reaching the Wyandotte Repeater
Notepad and pen/pencil to record messages
Bag lunch (Some assignment are a long distance from where one can purchase food and we cannot substitute for you while you are looking for a place to eat)
Comfortable chair (optional)
Cell phone for back up communications with the NCS
Tire Pump with dual fittings (Optional)

Net Control Station will be located at the Willow Metropark swimming pool area

6:30 AM a few to help put up the antenna and MCRC banner.
6:45 AM report for assignments if you have not already received them by other means such as email or US mail.
Be aware there is a $10.00 daily park admission fee good for all Metroparks. Annual passes are $21.00 for seniors.

Breakfast at Lake Erie Metropark starts at 8 AM. I will attempt to assign operators to their checkpoint in such a way that those locations at the extreme distances on the routes can go to the breakfast prior to reporting to their checkpoint. The relief operators, providing we have any, will replace others in turn for breakfast.

Phishing Scheme Targeting ARRL E-Mail Forwarding Service Participants

A phishing scheme currently afoot has been targeting ARRL members who have signed up for the ARRL E-Mail Forwarding Service and have an @arrl.net e-mail alias. An e-mail from “Arrl Webmail Admin” with the subject line “ACCOUNT UPGRADE” was received September 25 by an unknown number of members who use @arrl.net e-mail aliases. The e-mail, which requests that recipients reply by providing their usernames and passwords, did not come from the ARRL, and anyone receiving this sort of message should delete it and not reply. The ARRL would never distribute an e-mail requesting personal information.

“ARRL is aware of this phishing scheme and is working to block the sender’s e-mail address at our upstream provider,” said Andy Shefrin, KB1YHB, ARRL’s IT Infrastructure & Operations Manager. “As with any e-mails of unknown origin, do not open or reply.” Simply replying to this e-mail alerts the sender that your e-mail address is valid.

The bogus message indicates that access to @arrl.net account holders is being “removed” and accounts “upgraded to a new enhanced web mail user interface provided by arrl.net.” Recipients are being asked to provide usernames and passwords “to ensure your e-mail address book is saved in our database.” This is clearly an effort to harvest @arrl.net subscriber information and valid e-mail addresses.

Ignore any message of this sort that seeks to have recipients provide any sensitive information, such as usernames, account numbers, and passwords. If you experience any problem with e-mail forwarding, send details to the ARRL IT Department.

New Meeting Location

We’ve moved.

Beginning in September the Motor City Radio Club will have a new meeting location. We will be meeting in the community center of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wyandotte. The address of the church is 465 Oak St. Wyandotte, MI 48192. This is at the southeast corner of Oak and 5^th. The community center is not actually in the church building, but rather directly across 5^th Street from the church. It is the building they formerly used as their school.

Parking;

There are a limited number of parking spots along both sides of 5^th Street between the church and the community center. There is also a parking lot across Oak Street from the community center. Although only a few of the parking stops along 5^th Street are designated as handicapped parking, please be considerate of those members that are mobility challenged, and those who are bringing in equipment and supplies, and if you can please utilize the parking lots across Oak Street.

Building access;

Enter the building through the 5^th Street entrance. This door is wheelchair accessible. The room we will be meeting in is on the lower level, on the right, after you go around the corner to the left. There is a handicap lift for those that need it. If you need help operating the lift please ask.

Building etiquette;

The community center has several other users, some have their own rooms, and some using shared rooms like we will be doing. We ask that you respect the other users and refrain from roaming the building. All of the facilities we will be using are on the lower level.

The building is the former church school, but they no longer run a school, so they are trying to justify keeping the building open by turning it into a community center. They are not just seeing this as us renting a room, but rather as us becoming a part of their community. They are having a car show and open house on September 6^th if you would like to check out what they have going on there.

May Fox Hunt.

The Motor City Radio Fox Hunt 2015 season got off to an exciting start On Saturday, May 30th. The fox, Dave KC8ODH and Linda KC8PKY chose a park in Taylor to operate from, which on paper would appear to be a straight forward, relative easy location, however their low power transmission and unexpected propagation patterns seemed to confuse the hunters and cause them to scatter hither and yon. When the dust settled only 2 teams out of 4 managed to home in on the fox’s location. The team of N8MWQ , N8FNC, and AC8KD found them first and with the winning distance of 15.2 miles. The team of K8SB and WB8AFO were the second to arrive and with the second place distance of 17 miles. The other 2 teams, N8TDF, N8SLJ, KB8TOO; and K8HV, JERRY failed to find the fox within the designated time limit.

After the hunt many of the participants resigned to a local restaurant for lunch and swapping of hunting tales.

The next hunt will be on Saturday June 20th. We meet at Leo's Coney Island at 19230 Fort Street in Riverview at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast. Then at 10:30 a.m. people group up and begin the hunt for the Fox. If you don't have any directional finding equipment, don't worry. There will be someone there that you can ride with. It's sure to be a fun time for all!

At the June meeting the presentation will be all about Field Day and finalizing our operating plan for this year. A sign-up sheet will be circulated at the June meeting for those who are willing to bring a dish to pass both for the Friday evening steak dinner and though out the weekend. Please contribute where you can.

What to bring to Field Day:

· Yourselves. Our success on Field Day depends on club participation. Please sign up and come join us.

· Friends, family, neighbors, anyone else that might be interested in Amateur Radio. We will have a GOTA station up and running and welcome all visitors.

· Tables and chairs. As we are not at a regular park, we will not have an abundance of picnic tables to use at our food tent. If you have access to a multitude of table and chairs that can be brought to the site let me know.

·         Food. Bring a dish to pass. If you have special dietary needs make sure you will have what you will need.

·         2 Meter HT. We will be on 147.42 for onsite communication and 147.84/147.24 (The Wyandotte Repeater) for talk-in.

·         Sun Screen/bug spray/water and whatever else you need for a safe and enjoyable day outside.

Dust off the Yagi and fire up the attenuator, it’s time to start the 2015 MCRC Fox Hunting season. The first hunt is Saturday, May 30th. We meet at Leo's Coney Island at 19230 Fort Street in Riverview at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast. Then at 10:30 a.m. people group up and begin the hunt for the Fox. If you don't have any directional finding equipment, don't worry. There will be someone there that you can ride with. It's sure to be a fun time for all!

Due to the Dayton Hamvention, the first Fox Hunt of the 2015 season has been moved to Saturday, May 30th, 2015 at 10:00 AM.

Because of this change, there will be two breakfasts in May. The original breakfast scheduled for May 16th will still be held and a second club breakfast will be held preceding the hunt on May 30. Both breakfasts will be located at Leo's Coney Island, 19230 Fort Street in Riverview at 9:00 AM.

M.C.R.C. ICE-OUT 2015

Well its time... the 2015 ice-out will begin with the Tuesday March 3rd session of the MCRC 2 meter net..

Last year we began the challenge with the Ice Burg at the end of my driveway.. This year i have decided to use the pile in the back lot at work.. "Some participants last year were threatening to add salt to the ice burg to speed up the melting" so this burg is in a fenced in lot and under camera surveillance....

Congratulations to Anne K8AE for last years correct date of April 1st, Hopefully i will be able to present her with the 2014 Ice-Out mug at Fridays Meeting.

At your time of check-in give me the date you want and if its not taken you are all set.

This year the pile is just under 6 feet tall and 15 feet front to back and i will limit it to the first 20 feet in front of the semi trailer..

Wednesday night RACES net

Our good friend Ron, N8XZ, needs your help!

Every Wednesday night at 2100, the Wayne Co. RACES group holds their weekly emergency net. Recently the participate in the the weekly nets has decreased.

Disaster preparedness is one of the founding tenets of Amateur radio. It is imperative that we as Amateur radio operators support local scheduled emergency nets. We never know when we may be called to use these nets in a real emergency. Without regular practice, when the time for support happens, it will be difficult to fulfill our responsibility to the public at large.

He has asked that you take some time out of your busy schedules and add the Wednesday night RACES net to your schedule.

The net tends to be very short. Sometimes lasting no more than 10 to 15 minutes.

PRB-1 UPDATE

To the hams of Michigan:

Here is an important update from our State Government Liaison, Ed Hude, WA8QJE on the status of the PRB-1 project here in Michigan.

In September, 2014, Senator Nofs and the members of the Senate Energy and Technology Committee unanimously reported SB 0493 favorably to the Committee of the Whole. The Senate held the third reading of the bill on October 22, 2014 and the Senate passed the bill unanimously.

Now our bill is heading to the House of Representatives for their consideration. It is expected that the bill will be assigned to the Energy and Technology Committee in the House and it is time for our membership to communicate with the Chairman and the members of the Committee.

This is where I need your help. I am asking that each and every one of you contact the Committee Chair and the Committee Members of the House Energy and Technology Committee to encourage them to take action on this bill.

This communication can be best done by email. Below the attached sample message is a listing of the Chairman and members of the committee and their House website where you can cut and paste your letter on their website or their email address where you can use your word processor to generate your letter. It is acceptable for anyone to send a note to all of the Committee Members, even if you don’t live in his or her district. Just make sure that your subject line is “House Energy and Technology Committee”. That will get the necessary attention.

The following is a suggestion as to what to include in your message.

If you deviate from this message, please be respectful and communicate in a professional tone. Please be sure to carbon copy or “cc:” both myself and our Section Manager Larry Camp, WB8R.

You do not need to be a licensed operator to send this message. Even your spouse can send a separate message. (Just be sure to not place a call sign in the signature)

January Member Auction

Hams by nature are collectors. (some would say hoarders) We see something in a catalog or online and say “Wow I would really use that!” so we order it up! Then after it has been delivered, you find that you don’t use that gizmo as much as you thought you would. Now that gizmo sits next to your rig and has collect the dust of many years. GOOD NEWS!! The club will be holding an auction this January! Now is your chance to pass on that super useful gizmo to someone else in the club.

The January 2015 meeting will be a member’s auction to benefit the club. John – N8KAM and Jim – KD8HFX will review the items first and see if there are any items that the club as a whole could benefit from. The remaining items will go up for bid in January. To be clear items you bring will be a donation to the club, and proceeds will go to benefit the club. Proceeds of items of significant value (entire stations, radios etc) will be shared with the owner and the club. (Terms to be negotiated with the owner)

Begin collection the items that you would like to pass on to other members. Jim – KD8HFX has agreed to house and catalog the items for the auction. Contact him directly for times and availability for drop off.

There will be a commemoration of the "birthday" of The American Legion, March 15-17, 2014 with a Special Event Station. K9TAL Special Event Station operations will be limited to Saturday, March 15. They will operate using the club call sign: K9TAL, from 0900 to 1500 EST. All those who QSO with K9TAL - members and non-members - and are entered into their logbook will be eligible to receive a certificate citing their contact. QSL cards will be sent as well. On Saturday, March 8, 2014 Glenwood United parking lot was packed and the side streets were also overflowing with parked cars. As it turned out there were 12 applicants For ham radio exams. Nick Stahl, KD8SJM passed his general exam. Paul George, KB8SVO and Charles Smith, KD8WFS both walked in with their generals and walked out having earned their extra class license. Richard Mandel walked in without a license, and proceeded to pass his tech, general and extra class! Scott Underwood, Brandon Carter, Adam Knoll, Matthew Miller, William Nemer, Andrea Elkins and William Oberdieck all entered without a license and earned their tech. Of 12 people 11 passed their exam for new or upgrade license.

Fortunately we had experienced VEs handling the paperwork led by Bruce Moyer, KI8GR and Duffy K8ETL. They were aided and abetted by Bob Rehahn, AC8DZ who distributed the welcome packets to those who passed exams until we ran out of the packets. We also ran out of the application forms and Woody, N8MWQ was sent on a copy run but learned that the local drug store does not make copies any longer. He resourcefully found Dale WA8FRD who scanned the forms into the club computer and printed out some for us. Thanks also to Mack, KA8DOT; Jim K8SSB; Bill AC8KO; and Gary W8GPR.

ARRL CENTENNIAL QSO PARTY!

The ARRL Centennial QSO Party is a year-long operating event that celebrates hams making contacts. In the end you will have accumulated points, worked new stations and made new friends all over the world.

It began January 1, 2014 and will extend through December 31, 2014. It is billed as the "mother" of all QSO parties by our Division Director. The Centennial QSO party actually is two distinct-but-related activities. These involve working W1AW from each state (W1AW Worked All States) and a Centennial Points Challenge.

2013 FIELD DAY RESULTS

Well, the 2013 Field Day results are in and official as posted in the December issue of QST. I am happy to report that W8MRM Motor City Radio Club ranked number one in the State of Michigan in class 2A. Our total score including bonus points is 4,996! In a future issue of the Spark Gap, Stan K8SB will have a more detailed analysis of our performance. As the 2013 Field Day chairperson, I want to thank the staff and all club members that participated in making this a great event. Now we have to turn our attention to making the 2014 Field Day the best yet!

American Legion Takes To Airwaves In Salute To Veterans. (W9L).

Legionnaires will honor their fellow veterans in a special on-the-air tribute on Veterans Day, Nov 11. Members of The American Legion Amateur Radio Club (TALARC) will operate from 9 A.M. through 5 P.M., using the FCC specially-issued call sign - W9L.

Ham radio operators wishing to contact Special Event Station W9L on Veterans Day should tune to 20 meters - 14.275. Any ham radio operator who contacts the station are eligible to receive an attractive full-color commemorative certificate.

Hello all,

The ARROW club and Wastenaw Co. ARPSC are short a few amateurs to help out with the One Helluva Ride cycling event Saturday July 13th. The OHR event is one of the the largest cycling events in the area, as it traverses 4 counties and includes more than 1500 riders.

Amateurs provide SAG support, for riders who 'sag' behind or otherwise experience mechanical difficulties and need help. I helped out last year with this event, and it was a load of fun driving around and helping people who have flats, or heat exhaustion.

You don't necessarily need a radio to partake in this event. You can even ride along with another person and act as the radio operator if you don't want to be the one driving around. Jeff W8SGZ is organizing the event, and needs a few more people to help out at the event for shifts during the day.

If you are interested in helping out or want more info, send Jeff an email at w8sgz@tsshome.com.

Please note that this is a conflict with the pickup of donated equipment in Warren. I'm still looking for a few more people to come help load equipment that morning starting at 10 am. If you can help out, (especially with a pickup truck), please send me an email!

Thanks to each of you the MCRC Field Day 2013 is in the log book. It was amazing to see everyone in action. Without the collective effort of each of you working as a team our Field Day would not have been a success as I believe it was.

In the next week or so I will be getting with the staff to go over the numbers and sending our paperwork to ARRL. When I receive the final results from ARRL it will be posted.

Field Day 2013 is Almost Here!

Hi Everyone,

As I sit here and look at the calendar I can't believe that Field Day 2013 is this coming weekend! What seemed so far in the future when we all started to plan for this special event is now almost here and it is "show time". We will meet this coming Friday June 21st. for lunch at Rockwood Family Restaurant, 22825 Huron River Drive, Rockwood, MI. 48173 at 12 noon, (I-75 Rockwood Exit). At about 2:00 P.M. we will go to the park to set up for FD. (Mercure Park, located on Fort RD. between Woodruff & Huron River DR.). After set-up we will have a steak dinner for those who have ordered steaks. Operating for FD begins on Saturday (22nd.) at 2:00 P.M. and will be in operation for 24 hours until 2:00 P.M. Sunday (23rd.). Don't forget on Saturday morning at 10:00 A.M. we will have a VE exam for those interested. After FD operations we will take down everything and store it for next year's FD.

Together we can make our Club Anniversary FD a memorable event.

I just wanted to remind everyone that this Friday 06/07/2013 after the business section of our general meeting we will devote the rest of the meeting to FD matters. All staffers will be called upon to report to the club the status of the part of FD that they will be overseeing and what else needs to be done. Our tent captains will be taking the last of the sign ups for operating and logging. There will also be a presentation on logging on the computer for FD as a review for all of us and to introduce the procedure to our new members. Also last minute orders will be taken for FD shirts and steaks.

I'm pleased to inform you that on Saturday, July 27th, the Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club is sponsoring their 2013 CMARC "OUTDOOR" HAMFEST where we "have everything, but the ROOF"!! It's going to be a day FULL of FUN for Ham Radio, Computer, and Electronic equipment enthusiasts, as well as their families! Once again, this year it's being held at the Holt Christian Church located at 2424 S. Washington Road in Lansing, Michigan from 8am-1pm. Admission is $3.00 per person, with kids 15 years and under getting in FREE!! Admission for Vendors/Sellers is also $3.00 each and that includes 1 sales space (additional sales spaces are $5.00 each). "Dentronics" will be there again this year and remember, Denny is a dealer in NEW Alinco, Diamond, and MFJ equipment! "Stappywear" will be on hand again, too, taking orders for their silk-screened and embroidered Ham-related apparel.

In addition, this year we'll be having VE testing (Walk-ins are Welcome!), a Special Event Station (K8H), a forum on Digital Communications, and an Antenna building demo. We have a lot of great prizes this year, with our Grand Prize being an Alinco DJ-V57T Dual-Band HT!! That prize will be drawn at 1pm and will be mailed, it if you've left already!) Antenna Help Needed

Rich - N8SBZ Approached me at the Friday meeting asking if there were any members that would be willing to help him repair his wire antenna. It is a roof mounted antenna that needs to have the feed line replaced. Rich is not able to get on the roof to make the repairs himself.

Dear MCRC member,

Just a reminder that Field Day is next weekend, June 23rd and 24^th. It will be held at Mercure Park in Rockwood. The park is located on Fort Rd between Woodruff and Huron River Drive. On Friday the 22^nd we will be meeting at noon at Rockwood Family Restaurant, at the I-75 Rockwood exit just west of the exit on the south side of (North) Huron River Drive. At about 2 PM we will go to the park to set up for Field Day. After set-up we will have a steak dinner for those who have ordered steaks. Field Day begins on Saturday at 10 AM with a VE exam for those interested. Operating begins at 2 PM Saturday and lasts 24 hours until 2:00 Sunday. Then we tear down everything.

It promises to be fun for all.

We've posted a new informational packet about amateur radio in the members link section.

We are asking assistance from the members to distribute the Introduction to Ham Radio flyer to local public spaces like community centers, churches, sporting good stores, and libraries.

The goal of this hand out is to introduce the public to the hobby of Amateur radio and build a general interest in the hobby.

If you are willing to help with this project please follow the following guidelines.

1. Please notify the board where you would like to place the flyers. We will be keeping a list of locations where we have placed flyers and what locations have been contacted.

2. Get an O.K. from the board PRIOR to approaching a location. We don't want to duplicate efforts or have multiple members 'harassing' locations.

3. Be sure to get approval from the locations management. Give them a way of contacting the club.

4. Only distribute the Introduction to Ham Radio flyer.

5. Let the board know when you are successful in getting our information placed in a location.

If you have any questions please contact a member of the board.

This past weekend's unusual Autumn snow storm caused significant damage to a few of W1AW's antennas, especially the 40-meter yagis. Until a temporary 40-meter antenna is installed, there will be no CW transmissions on 40 meters. W1AW's CW transmissions can still be received on 160, 80, 20, 17, 15, 10 and 2 meters.

Thank you for responding to my e-mail.

The IEEE is continuing its mission of outreach to students to interest them in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through extracurricular activities
that engage their innate interest in the universe around them. Part of that engagement
is using and building tools that allow them to extend their reach and senses.

As part of that outreach, we are hoping to help students build small electrical and electronic projects that allow them to learn basic electrical and electronic skills and fundamental theory and practice as well. Some of these projects will teach component identification, soldering, circuit construction, packaging, power considerations, etc.. In effect, most of the skills needed in amateur radio.

Along with this experience, we hope to include options for students to see amateur
radio equipment in operation, visit amateur radio stations, visit a field day outing, learn
Morse code and prepare to become 'hams' themselves.

Skills of the people who will work with the students would be those of almost any one in MCRC who has already taught any of the license classes; working with students, teaching hands on skills, explaining electrical and electronic theory is fundamental and simple language.

I would expect that most projects would require someone to be the project leader, teacher and guide during a 6 to 8 week period of about 2 hours a week.
Initial program modules are planned to be based out of the:

Caroline Kennedy Library

Dearborn Heights, MI 48127
under the direction of Mary Howard, Supervising Librarian.

By the first of 2012, the library will be equipped with a number of 'Science Experiment Kits' to demonstrate fundamental scientific principles to young students. Some of these may be adaptable to more advanced intentions, or perhaps would be ideal for initial learning in areas of electronics.

We intend to step beyond these initial introductory 'experiments' to offer more advanced
projects in radio, radio-astronomy, RF sensing, laser sensing, remote control vehicles,
etc.. the list can go as far as our imagination and manpower will permit.

The plan is to pair an IEEE member with an amateur for each project or class so that
no one is required to shoulder the entire responsibility for teaching and supervising
alone. For large projects, or large groups of students, a corresponding larger 'team' of
instructors might be required. (We are doing this for the first time, and some learning on our part is to be expected as we iron out the 'kinks' and develop the program plan.)

Note that this is our initial 'pilot' program, based out of a neighborhood library. We hope
to locate more libraries who's supervising librarian's who would also be in a position
to support programs such as these in their communities and expend the program as
we learn what works.

I hope to be able to visit MCRC in either November or December and speak to the
membership about this program.

At 8 AM on Monday, August 22, the Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) activated for Hurricane Irene -- the first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season -- currently a Category 1 storm. HWN members are monitoring 14.325 MHz in support of WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio Station at the National Hurricane Center (NHC). In advance of the storm’s approach, the Bahamian government has issued a hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeastern Bahamas.

As of 11 AM (EDT) on Monday, August 22, Irene is located about 105 miles west-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico and about 70 miles east-northeast of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; it is moving west-northwest at 13 MPH, with maximum sustained winds near 80 MPH with higher gusts. According to the NHC, Hurricane Irene is expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours.

As the storm approached Puerto Rico on Sunday, the NHC issued a hurricane warning for the area, now downgraded to a tropical storm warning. Hurricane Irene hit Puerto Rico, causing power outages throughout the island. More than 1 million are still without power on Monday morning. As of 11 AM (EDT) Monday, August 22, hurricane warnings are in effect for the north coast of the Dominican Republic, from the Haiti border eastward to Cabo Engano. A hurricane watch is in effect for the Central Bahamas and the north coast of Haiti from Le Mole St Nicholas eastward to the Dominican Republic border. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Haiti, Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra, and the south coast of the Dominican Republic, from south of Cabo Engano westward to the Haiti border.

Hurricane Irene could cause heavy rain, flooding and mudslides in the Caribbean, hitting Puerto Rico on Monday and moving on to Hispanola later that day or Tuesday, August 23. The storm is expected to then track through parts of the Bahamas from late Tuesday night through early Friday morning. Forecasters are calling for the hurricane to reach South Florida as soon as Thursday, August 25 and move up the coast into Georgia and the Carolinas by Friday or Saturday.

Periodically, the ARRL’s Atlantic Division hosts a “webinar” -- an interactive Web-based seminar, designed to facilitate communication between a small number of presenters and a large remote audience using the Internet. Atlantic Division Director Bill Edgar, N3LLR, and the National Capital Region D-STAR Association will present a two-part webinar discussion on D-STAR technology and its application to emergency communications. We had about 600 riders despite the weather. The day started with heavy rain but fortunately the skies cleared for the ride. Thanks to Jim K8SSB for bringing some of his scouts to the event they all got on the air at one time or another. John N8KAM thanks for bringing all the equipment. We had enough help to cover all the checkpoints on all 3 routes. The Downriver Cycling Club was again happy to have our assistance. Thank you again to all who came.

Your prompt help to defend one of our amateur bands is urgently
requested. Please read and follow through on the requested action.

You may have already heard that our 440 MHz band is being attacked by a
bill introduced into the US House of Representatives. In its current
form, HR 607 would take away the 420-440 MHz segment that is presently
allocated to Amateur Radio on a secondary basis as our 70 cm band.
Along with certain other segments not allocated to Amateur Radio, the
420-440 MHz segment would become part of a spectrum “give back”
involved in allocating 758-763 and 788-793 MHz for a Public Safety
broadband network.

The concept of this network has merit. Everyone wants first responders
to have the radio systems they need in order to protect themselves and
us. However, there is absolutely no need to take our 440 MHz band in
making it happen. We need to let our US Representatives know we oppose
the current form of HR 607.

To let your US Representative know you oppose the present bill, go to
http://www.kd4pyr.net/hamletter.htm. Insert your call sign where
indicated and follow the simple instructions. The name and address of
your US Representative will automatically be put into the letter, as
will your name and address. It will be ready to be printed and signed.

IMPORTANT: Please be sure to observe the following once you have
printed your letter:

- Be sure to sign it. Letters without a handwritten signature are not
effective.

- Signed letters can be sent by fax or postal mail. They can also be
scanned into PDF format and e-mailed as a file attachment. Postal
mail: John Chwat, Chwat & Co., Suite 103, 625 Slaters Lane, Alexandria,
VA 22314. E-mail: john.chwat@chwatco.com. Fax number: (703) 684-7594.

- Do not send this letter or any letter about HR 607 to your US
Senators at this time. The bill is only in the US House of
Representatives. Letters sent on HR 607 to US Senators will merely
waste their time and demonstrate lack of knowledge of how our system of
government works.
WHY SHOULD the letter be mailed to John Chwat? There are two reasons.
First, all postal mail to members of the US House (and other government
bodies) is delayed 6 to 8 weeks in being searched for hazardous
materials that may be included in them. Second, Mr. Chwat will increase
the value of your individual letter by combining it with others and
delivering the stack of letters directly to your Representative's
office. This manner of delivery makes a particular impact on our
Congressmen.

If you feel it necessary to mail your letter directly to your
Representative, do it. However, please also send a signed copy of it to
Mr. Chwat for the reasons outlined above.

For your information, the letter generating utility will be open for
use by any US amateur for at least a couple of weeks.

Thanks for your help and support in this important effort. Please let
me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

March 20 Half Marathon on Grosse Ile

Just a quick note.

We have been asked to assist with the Cystic Fibrosis ½ Marathon on Grosse Ile to be held on March 20, 2011. This is a first time event designed to raise money for CF research and will be running around the island.

The race course is 13.1 Miles long and will start and finish near the Grosse Ile High School on Gray.

If you would put this information out for me I could use between 20 to 30 ARO’s to assist. The event will include runners with active CF and we really want to keep an eye out for them. We will be running 3 weary wagons and at least 3 (I hope 4) aid stations in addition to 6 water stops.

I need to cover the weary’s, the aid and water stations in addition to other spotters,.

Operators should CONTACT ME DIRECT, that way they are not bothering you.

Special Event Station

For the 14th consecutive year, members of the Stu Rockafellow Amateur Radio Society will be traveling to Whitefish Point, MI and Paradise, MI to do a ham radio ‘Special Event’ “Remembering the Edmund Fitzgerald”. The Fitzgerald went down with her crew of 29 on November 10th 1975 in Lake Superior approximately 17 miles from Whitefish Point, MI. This marks the 35th year of that tragedy.

The call sign used at Whitefish Point will be N8F and the call sign used at Paradise, MI (11 miles South of Whitefish Point) will be K8F. The Whitefish Point Lighthouse # is USA 887. We expect to be operational Friday November 5th thru Sunday November 7th with up to 4 stations.

Our target frequencies are 3860, 7240, 14260, 18160*, 21360, and 28360* (kHz SSB) (* secondary) NOTE: CW operation is not planned.

This year is the Centennial year for the Boy Scouts of America. The Great Lakes Council planned a Centennial rendezvous for the weekend of September 24 to the 26th. Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties field will Metropark. The MC RC was asked to help set up a radio station in the event. A special event call sign of K8S was obtained. On Friday JimK8SSB, picked up the club trailer and brought it to the site. He then claimed our spot in a large tent. Around 2PM Dale, Stan, Dave and I arrived to set up. We met up with Frank Maynard NF8N, Wallace Murray KE8HR and his son BillKC8TVG. We looked over the site to determine where to set up the antenna. We quickly realized as Stan so aptly put it that it was field day all over again. We had a great big park and only a limited area in which to place our antenna. So we put up the antenna and tied a bunch of caution tape to keep everyone safe. Dale and Frank put up the 2 m beam. Later John N8KAM brought the radio out. We set it up and tested the antenna to be sure worked.

On Saturday morning we set up the HF station and the 2 m station. Frank setup a PSK 31 station and Wallace set up a satellite station. At 9 AM the scouts, families and leaders filtered into the tent. We asked the scouts if they would like to operate the radio. Several scouts were able to make HF contacts including one with a similar event happening in Colorado. When HF contacts were not possible, we were fortunate enough to have Marv KC8DQJ, standing by at his QT H to talk to the scouts. We kept him busy most of the day. The cub scouts were totally fascinated by the whole thing. If they got “mike –shy”, Marv would ask them a question about the event and soon they would be chattering away. One little scout kept looking around the station and asked “where is he?. Jim K8SSB spent a lot of time teaching CW to the scouts. He had a chart showing the code for each letter of the alphabet. He would ask each person their name and then have them find the appropriate code. He would demonstrate how to send code and then have the scout attempt to send their name on a practice key. We stayed busy right up till 5PM when that portion of the event ended.

I would like to thank Dale WA8FRD, Stan K8SB, Jim K8SSB, John N8KAM and Dave KC8OBH for helping set up and run the station as well as taking it down at the end. A special thanks to Marv KC8DQJ for being there to talk to the scouts.

Below, Hanson mentions the need for adherance to the youth protection guidelines. There is a short, no cost, online course that can be taken on the council's website... It satisfies the requirements plus. Per Hanson, it's just necessary to understand that there will NEVER be an opportunity where an adult will be alone with a Scout. ANY interaction with a Scout must occur in plain sight of other Scouts and adults. There are no secret organizations or clubs...

Even though you are not a registered scouter, you can sign up, get a user name, and take the course. Upon completion, you have the ability to print out your completion card. It may ask you for your scouter number... you can skip that part... If it asks you for the council number, it's 272.

Boy Scouts of America Centennial Rendez Vous
