Licensing and Education

The MCRC has a long history of educating adults and children in Amateur Radio. Most recently, we have been able to secure some time and space in libraries in the Downriver area. Our current classes include a Technicians Licensing class and a course on Basic Electronics and Soldering.

FCC Licensing Exams

Take your licensing exam with us! Seven times a year our volunteer examiners hold licensing exam sessions. You do not need to be a member of the club or have taken any of our classes to take the exam.

For upcoming exam dates and to register please see below.

Location: First United Methodist Church, 72 Oak St, Wyandotte, MI 48192.
Church is located on the NW corner of Oak and Biddle.

Cost: $15

Items to bring with you:

  1. $15.00 exam fee (Exact Amount Preferred)
  2. Number 2 pencil
  3. An original of your current FCC license (if you have one)
  4. A copy of your current FCC license (if you have one)
  5. Two pieces of Identification (at least one photo)
  6. Your FRN Number.  If this is an upgrade, your FRN number is on your license.

All new applicants and upgrades MUST have a valid Email Address and a FCC Registration Number (FRN) in order to obtain their new license.  If you are upgrading, you already have an FRN number.  That number can be found on your current license.

To obtain an FRN number visit the FCC Universal Licensing System page at: https://apps.fcc.gov/cores.  You must first create an account by clicking the "REGISTER" button under "Need a Username?".  After you obtain your user name and password, return to that same site and login under "Username Login".  Then choose "Register New FRN".

After you take the exam and the papers are submitted , you will receive an email that will contain a link to an FCC page where you need to pay the new $35 application fee.  This fee only applies to new licenses and renewals.  Not to upgrades.  You will have 10 calendar days, from the date of the application file number being issued, to pay.

After the fee is paid, and the FCC has processed an application, you will receive a second email from the FCC with a link to your official license or, in very rare instances, an explanation for why the application was dismissed or denied. The link will be valid for 30 days.

Upgrades will just receive a link to their official license and the $35 fee will not apply.

More information can be found at: http://www.arrl.org/what-to-bring-to-an-exam-session.

Please arrive at 10:00 am.  Testing will begin after paperwork is completed and we should be finished by 12:00pm.
